Taking the Tern for a Triathlon

This last weekend I took my Tern Link D8 folding bike out for a Sprint Triathlon in Chaska Minnesota. As this was my first triathlon, it's hard to judge, but overall in my opinion it was a pretty good experience.

Of course there was a lot to learn the first time around, i.e. transitions, swimming with other swimmers kicking at my face, weeds in the lake grabbing at my arm, ect.

I have been training for the event for about a month prior, focusing mainly on swimming as I felt confidant in biking and I am pretty good at running. I could pace a sub 8 minute mile for a 5k, my best being around 7:40, but the week before I was lucky enough to spend it at elevation in the Rockies, where I was sleeping at an elevation of ~9,000ft. Minnesota is around 0 so that was a boost, not that it helped me in the running during the race.

I put in a lot of effort learning how to swim, I am a strong swimmer but have never really swum laps or if I did when I was a kid my body has completely forgotten how. The first two or so goes at it I was breathing out and in with my head above water, I somehow forgot that you could breath out underwater. Needless to say my swimming time was not so great, but as they say with your first time out it was a personal best!

On the Tern I paced 15.1 miles per hour, and went the course (15.4 miles) in 01:03:26.2

That's me and my cousin who I trained with, we pretty much tied, he finished 6 seconds after I did which is incredibly close. Although we finished so close he never saw me after the start of the race which is pretty amazing. My cousin clocked a pace of 15.6 on his bike there, which is admittedly a bit more well suited for a triathlon.

The finish a re-enactment.
